A reading slump or what to read next

I often see posts on various book pages where the person is asking what to do when they fall into a reading slump.

They go on to say that they've read all of X's books and Y's books and now they don't know what to do to get reading again. Essentially, what they are saying is,"I'm bored."

When I look up the authors they've mentioned, I find that their books are basically the same (often formulaic) story over and over again. I know a response to that is that every story is a story of the heart so what else is an author to do?

I counter that with a referal to many books I have found and read with great delight. Stories by authors from other countries, books that are flying beneath the radar. Books that aren't hyped ad nauseam.

To those people I suggest they check out books that are outside their comfort zone, that are different genres, that present new views of the world.

I don't know what you do when you are in reading slump, but here are a few suggestions:

Iona Iverson's Rules for Commuting - Clare Pooley

The Wizard of the Kremlin - Giuliano da Empoli

HHhH - Laurent Binet

Fragile Beasts - Tawni O'Dell

The Doctor of Aleppo - Dan Mayland

Under the Maidenhair - Billie Milholland

Binstead's Safari - Rachel Ingalls

Exit West - Mohsin Hamid

Domingo's Angel - Jenny Twist

The Palavar Tree - Wendy Unsworth

The Uncommon Reader - Alan Bennett

If you do read any of these, I would love to know what you thought of them.
